The Nepalese government has closed down the offices of the Dalai Lama’s official representative and those of a refugee welfare organisation. As there has been little in the way of provocation, this move is almost certainly a price extracted by China for its support to King Gyanendra and his embattled dispensation.
While Nepal has always been treading a fine line on the issue of Tibet, King Gyanendra has been relatively more willing to please the Chinese government by circumscribing the activities of the Dalai Lama’s supporters.
The clever men in Beijing know when it is a good time to strike a bargain. But whatever it was they promised King Gyanendra, it is unlikely to amount to much.
