Like corporate entities, jihadi outfits too go in for rebranding to obfuscate unpleasant memories linked to their names. Sometimes their shareholders carry out a restructuring, consolidating when scale is important or spinning-off units during other times.
Now, a jihadi leader has ‘resigned’. Fazlur Rehman Khalil, mentor of the Taliban and chief of the Harkatul Mujahidin, apparently could not take the regulatory (and gastric) pressure that goes with the job. Resignation after all, provides a honourable exit, compared to being fired.
Not the gallows or the prison for him. Any number of post-retirement jobs await him — some board memberships perhaps, or even a return from retirement, once the gastric fires subside.
