It’s amazing the lengths people go to absolve Gen Musharraf of wrongdoing or even knowledge thereof.
After Benazir Bhutto declared that Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud was only a ‘pawn’ in the hands of retired Pakistani army officers, the Daily Times leapt to Musharraf’s rescue with an editorial, suggesting that “it is possible that President Musharraf is not aware of this linkage”. Just like it was possible for The Centrifugist to sell enrichment technology, weapons designs and uranium feedstocks to half-dozen shady regimes without Musharraf being aware.
Unawareness though is only a face-saving gesture, not a real defence. Musharraf’s indispensability to the United States—his main claim to remaining in power—relies on his being aware and being able to act. His defenders would be well advised not to stretch the argument.
