Kaliachak is a small town in Malda district, in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is not far from the border with Bangladesh. The arrest of a Pakistani member of Lashkar-e-Taiba in Kaliachak, prior to his attempt to cross over and seek refuge in Bangladesh, demonstrates the need for greater vigilance on the Indian side of the Bangladeshi border.
Police here today said that top LeT militant Nazir Ahmed Khan alias Muslim Inqilabi was arrested from the house of a brick kiln worker yesterday.
Two persons were also arrested for giving shelter to the top militant.
Police said Nazir Ahmed, who hailed from Pak occupied Kashmir, came to Malda from Mumbai to cross over to Bangladesh to avoid the police dragnet.
In fact, he was scheduled to cross over to Bangladesh last evening, police said. Several incriminatory documents were recovered from him.
The brick kiln worker recently went to Jammu and Kashmir to work and came in contact with Nazir Ahmed.
Police said Nazir Ahmed had stated that he along with 118 militants received training from the Pakistan Army and crossed over to Kashmir for creating violence. Each of the militants were given two AK-47 rifles, five magazines full of bullets and two grenades, Nazir told the police. [Daily Excelsior]
