Kathmandu under siege

Maoist rebels control land routes to Kathmandu

In the last few days Maoist guerillas have forced a shutdown of several top Nepali businesses, including Nepal’s oldest hotel, the Soaltee. Now, they have gone a step further and cut off all land routes to the capital.

Nepal could well become the 21st century’s first communist state.
