Juan Cole and Reuters suggest that by revealing the identity of Mohammed Naeem Noor Khan prematurely, US homeland security officials have sprung the trap too early, jeopardising British and Pakistani efforts to net more, and potentially bigger, fish.
What’s even worse is that this issue is getting increasingly entangled in the partisan world of the US presidential election campaign. The ‘outing of the mole’ may not be as dangerous as atmosphere of suspicion and double-guessing that is pervading the American political space. In fact, the story of the leak has already deepened the distrust among Americans, as well as exposed tensions with the British - surely an outcome that al Qaeda and its supporters were hoping for.
