Unshackling India’s private airlines…again

Waiting for take-off
This is an archived blog post from The Acorn.

It was first announced that India’s private airlines will be allowed to fly to South East Asian destinations last December. Then there was silence.

The Indian government has announced - yet again - that unshackling the airline industry is on the cards. Many countries focus their energies to ensuring foreign carriers have a tough time procuring routes and landing rights. India on the other hand tries as hard as it can to prevent its own airlines from becoming stronger players - all in the name of protecting Air India and Indian Airlines, India’s state-owned carriers. Anyone who has taken a domestic flight in India can testify to the immense difference between flying the stodgy Indian Airlines and the on-the-ball private airlines. It is long past the time the fat cats of India’s civil aviation industry were given a real run for their money.
