Amir Mir’s latest report on the state of Pakistani jihadi outfit makes interesting reading. Except for two dissident factions, Pakistan’s intelligence agencies have strengthened their control over the four major jihadi groupings.
However, after the initial crackdown, the four major jihadi outfits operating from Pakistan - Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), Harkat-ul-Mujahideen (HuM) and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM), resurfaced and regrouped effectively to run their respective networks as openly as before, though under different names…
Hafiz Mohammad Saeed, Maulana Masood Azhar, Maulana Fazalur Rehman Khalil and Syed Salahuddin - the respective leaders of these organizations - are again on the loose. The pattern of treatment being meted out to these leading lights of jihad by the Musharraf-led administration shows that they are being kept on the leash, ostensibly to wage a controlled jihad in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K).[Asia Times]Pakistan’s security apparatus is taking action against only the two splinter groups that have not accepted Musharraf’s ‘u-turn’ on the Taliban and bin Laden. Jamaatul Furqan and Harkatul Mujahideen al-Alami, offshoots respectively, of Jaish-e-Mohammed and Harkatul Mujahideen are the only ones in Musharraf’s crosshairs (and vice versa). That these splinter groups continue to function suggests that there are elements within Pakistan’s intelligence apparatus that want them around.
Related Link: In G Parthasarathy’s opinion, Musharraf has curbed the activities of only two outfits, the Harkatul Mujahideen and the Jaish-e-Mohammed. Other groups, notably Lashkar-e-Taiba, remains actively engaged in terrorist operations.
