Sajjad Ahmed Bhat, a senior leader of the Jaish-e-Mohammed who was captured by Indian security forces recently has this to say — Masood Azhar and his brother Ibrahim, both wanted men in India (and free men in Pakistan) travelled to Indian Kashmir as recently as July 2004 and addressed that outfit’s field commanders as recently as July 2004.
And more — the movement of these jihadis was made possible thanks to the strings pulled by an honourable member of the Indian Parliament, belonging to Railway Minister Laloo Prasad Yadav’s party.
Revelations as sensational as this, that too at the time of elections in Laloo’s Bihar, will inevitably be politicised, and possibly be buried under the white noise of coalition politics. That should be avoided at all costs.
Laloo Prasad Yadav and his system of politics has already destroyed Bihar, and by virtue of its presence in the Union cabinet, is threatening to profound damage to national institutions. The criminalisation of politics is one thing; simultaneously a subject of lamentation and apathy. But it has been left unchecked for far too long. If Bhat’s testimony is true, an unscrupulous member of parliament has been providing assistance to the leader of a terrorist organisation that in 2002, attacked the very parliament he is a member of.
The rough and tumble of Bihar is already providing a conducive environment for Maoist terrorists who operate in India and Nepal. Now this.
It is no longer a matter of ‘tainted’ ministers. It is a matter of national security. It is time that India gets tough on Laloo Prasad Yadav and his merry men.
