During his student life, [spiritual leader Maulana Abdul] Rahman entered his political career by joining the Islami Chhatra Shibir and later its patron, Jamaat-e-Islami. In the early 1980s, he studied at Madina Islami University in Saudi Arabia and worked at the Saudi embassy in Dhaka for five years from 1985.
He travelled to many countries, including India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Malaysia, with the latest visit to Pakistan last year.
Rahman said he set up a mosque and a madrasa with the financial help of well-known Islamic non-governmental organisation (NGO) Rabeta-e-Islam and another Islamic organisation, Islami Oytijjho Sangstha. [Daily Star] This outfit is looking more and more like the Taliban, just as its link to the Jamaat-e-Islami party is reminiscent of the Taliban’s link to Pakistani Islamic parties. Stung by press reports, the government has ordered Bangla Bhai’s arrest, but its still a long way off before he is handcuffed. The Jamaat-e-Islami is also implicated in the recent arms haul at a Chittagong port.
Independent media investigations also revealed that a labour leader linked to Jamaat-e-Islami, a major constituent of the ruling coalition, had employed workers at the jetty of the state-owned Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL) to offload the arms from two fishing trawlers and a local Bangladesh National Party (BNP) leader supervised the clandestine operation [Frontline]
