China puts Pakistani nuclear request on hold

As I pointed out in yesterday’s post it looks like China is moving towards being a more responsible player in the international scene. The BBC reports that China declined to support Pakistan’s Chashma nuclear project:

A spokesman at the Pakistan embassy in Beijing said talk of the deal being concluded during Mr Musharraf’s visit was just speculation’. A wide range of agreements signed after Mr Musharraf met President Hu Jintao on Monday included: * A $500m loan to Pakistan from China * A preferential trade agreement * An extradition treaty”

Looks like the Chinese extracted a promise from Musharraf on Xinjiang/East Turkestan and gave him a $500m loan. No prizes for guessing whom the second and third items favour !
