China keeps Pakistan guessing

This report from BBC NEWS suggests that the new leadership in China is more circumspect in its dealings with Pakistan.

This is an archived blog post from The Acorn.

It is certain that China sees itself as a strategic rival of the United States, but it is less certain if China sees continuing its alliance with the likes of North Korea and Pakistan will allow it to grab a key position in the international mainstream. To gets its fair position in the comity of nations, China must accept its responsibilities. The fact that it is playing a more responsible role in the North Korean crisis is a good step in this direction.

This does not mean China will jettison Pakistan as easily. China needs access to the Indian Ocean; hence its interests in developing Gwadar in Pakistan (accessed via the Karakoram Highway), and Myanmar.
